I mean, how many guitar legends would we not have today if they'd never taped songs off the radio to practice to as a kid? Taping songs off the radio (or shows off TV) is actually 100% legal, no question. You probably own the damn song on cd or in digital format anyway, and if not, it's not particularly worse than taping it off the radio in the old days to practice along to. I personally consider CDLC akin to downloading a free tab and playing along to the song. Certainly playing a song in your own home isn't a violation of copyright. It just depends on the particular situation and application. You're cutting into the song writer's imaginary potential profits by not buying their officially licensed sheet music! Doesn't matter if you can't read sheet music, or even if they don't offer official sheet music or tabs, it's still technically illegal, tho the RIAA mostly ignores it.This is all arguably within the realm of fair use. Have you ever downloaded a tab off of ultimate guitar, or a similar site? Guess what? Also technically somewhat illegal. Frankly, as a musician-even a hobbyist-you've likely broken the law many times, and probably should get used to doing so. it is arguably illegal, but the law is an ass-particularly IP law. Shame on you, you horrible criminal! You should have paid the writer of that song for that! Yes, even if you weren't charging anything for the performance.
